Shirley L. Reale, age 84, of Palmyra, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Hershey, passed away on March 17, 2023 at the Hershey Medical Center, surrounded by her devoted family and friends. She had lived in Hershey.
Shirley Eshleman was the seventh and final child to be born to the late Paul and Ethel (Mae) Eshleman. She was born on January 2, 1939 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She received her diploma from Hershey High School in 1957, and the following year, she wed Ron Reale, who has been her devoted spouse for the past 63 years. Shirley began working as a houseparent at the Milton Hershey School in the Junior Division program in 1962. She was fondly referred to as “Mom Reale” by the numerous youngsters who attended the school.
Shirley’s job at the school coincided with the beginning of her marriage to Ron. She was a loving and devoted mother who made each and every pupil feel as if they were her very own child by showering them with so much affection. She escorted a student home with the military-like precision of a drill sergeant while retaining the motherly warmth of a caregiver. Shirley worked in the admissions office of the school until the day she retired, after which she had also worked as a houseparent for a total of 25 years. was a devoted fan of Milton Hershey School despite the fact that she attended Hershey High School. She was a Hershey High School graduate.
She showed her support for the athletic teams by attending all of their games, cheering them on, and helping to prepare meals for the teams before each game. At the Dearden House, where the Alumni Homestead Chapter met, she prepared and served breakfast on Saturday mornings. Shirley was also an active member of the MHS Alumni Wives, and she eventually became an Honorary Alumnus of the school where she had previously held the position of president for a number of years. Shirley was an incredible seamstress and crafter, and she was also an excellent mother. She was a triple threat in the kitchen, where she would bake up a storm specializing in Rocky Road Fudge Bars, cook up great Italian delicacies, and throw fabulous parties.
